There are different ways of fixing hair extensions in your hair. The first thing to think about is what kind of extension you are getting. Is the hair is being extended a strand at a time or will you be having a weft attached? A strand at a time is also called strand by strand and means selecting a strand of your own hair and attaching a strand of hair extension using one of the ways listed later. A weft is a band of hair stitched together, ready to be taped or sewn onto your hair ( good for providing instant length and usually cheaper than individual strands).

The most common ways of fixing hair extensions are

Weaving - you usually go to the salon for this procedure and the stylist will section you hair to create rows, on each corn row, human hair extensions are sewn onto selected strands of your own hair using a needle, close by the scalp. Your hair strand will generally be pulled quite tight to get a good fixture, so this can be quite uncomfortable. This method of attaching hair extensions is often preferred due to the fact that there are no chemicals used. The hair extensions will need to be regularly checked for looseness, and re tighten as necessary.

Bonding - This method uses a chemical or glue to attach a hair extension to your hair, usually strand by strand. The extension is attached close to the scalp. Most extensions can be removed using a a remover to dissolve the glue.. Some times acetone is used.

Fusion - can be cold or warm fusion, link/lock fusion or fusion loops. This is where pretipped extension hair strands are coated with a chemical that “fuses” with your own hair when treated with an applicator gun. The extension can also be fixed using a l ring that is tightened around your hair strand and the extension strand to keep them attached. These are generally attached in a salon and may need to be tightened, if they become loose or removed(when finished with) by the stylist.

Clip-ons -the easiest to put in your hair and take out again. The extension can be clipped into your hair as close to the base as possible. Clip ons are usually made of cheaper quality hair and must be removed before washing hair.

Important things to think about attachment methods.

Are you looking for a permanent or temporary hair extension style. A permanent hair style change usually means a number of visits to your salon to get the human hair extensions properly attached and regular appointments to look care for them after wards. The human hair extensions will need to be looked after carefully to keep them looking healthy, this can mean less frequent hair washing using a good conditioning type shampoo. A temporary style change can often be put in at home, the hair extensions taken out when not needed and reused as required.

That’s because she’s just one of the many celebrities who chooses to have long hair through hair extensions rather than go through the painstaking and sometimes ugly process of growing it. Hair extensions look completely natural and you can go from short to long hair or have extremely thick hair, all in a matter of hours.

Joseph Mourad’s Hair and Beauty in Double Bay, Sydney has been providing hair Extensions services for five years. He is very particular and uses only the best quality human hair from India and can match it to your existing hair colour or you can choose any colour you want. It can be attached to any kind of hair and any length longer than 2cm. It is attached strand by strand.

The way it works is that each strand has about 20 hairs in it. They are attached to the natural hair, very close to each other so they look totally natural. It’s done by an ultrasonic vibration machine. A synthetic keratin, which is like the keratin found in hair acts as glue. The ultrasound softens the keratin and it grips onto the natural hair and blends into it and looks like its part of it.

A full head can take from 100 to 300 strands depending on the required thickness. The process of attaching the extensions can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours.

The first question that springs to mind is: Does it damage the natural hair? Mourad says emphatically, no. it doesn’t create any damage to your natural hair. In fact, it keeps the natural hair in its original condition. There is no special care, just how you would care for your natural hair; you wash, condition, comb and blow-dry it. If you are rough on your natural hair you will damage it and the same rules apply with extensions.

Extensions will last between 6 months and a year and eventually will fall out or can be removed. They are removed using surgical spirit, which is available from the chemist. This isn’t a harsh chemical and wont damage the hair.

Once the extensions have been attached you can treat them as normal. They can be combed, blow-dried, you can go swimming, and you can even have them coloured and cut if desired.

Many people seek out extensions for several reasons. Long hair will take three to four years to grow and until then can look pretty awful, with that “growing out” look. Hair extensions are a perfect way of disguising this, while continuing to grow your natural hair. Also, many people who don’t necessarily want long hair but want thick hair seek hair extensions. Then of course some people just want a new look and they want it now!

If you are seeking hair extensions Mourad recommends you visit someone experienced. It’s important to seek out somebody experienced. If the extensions aren’t attached properly a lot can fall out after two or three months. Also, the bonding can be thick and bulky which can be annoying when combing or sleeping. If it’s not done properly it can put strain on the natural hair and can tangle easily.

Also Mourad says it’s vital for a good result to start with good quality extensions. “A lot of people are doing extensions with bad quality hair. You want hair that’s not over treated, brittle and limp. I use only shiny, healthy hair.”
